Ode to Whitman
03:39
|

In a place not many know
There’s a town no one goes called Fevernall.
This story’s told in passing country-wide,
About the mountain locals try to climb.
A mountaineer discovered this town hall
His name: sir General Frederick Arthur Whitman
His titles, he did earn
By going where no man had gone before.
If it weren’t for Arthur Whitman
This essay would not be written.
Accompanied by his companions
They strode confidently up into the clouds and didn’t turn around and
Discovered what became Fevernall.
We owe it all to them,
Whitman and his companions.
Little is known about the man
Who helped our Fred find this land
I guess he’s dead.
But Whitman himself is still alive yet ill
An outspoken member of the town council
And in his days he fought in rings.
Could never afford nice things.
Stubborn like my toe, he is my hero
Who made it through the snow
And the adventurer in everybody
Someday we’ll make it out of school shorts
Get muscles like our Dad’s
Break in a brumby
Do it on a Sunday.
They’ll never know that we’ve run away
We’ll turn out just like them
Whitman and his companions
I’m saying it as fast as I can
(I’m out of time)

The First Step

You might be surprised to find just how tall this thing is.
No one has been able to tame her since 1856.
You can’t speak if you want to conquer Whitman’s Peak.
The tiniest vibration can cause an avalanche.
I can’t see myself take the first step up the mountain without her
I can’t see myself take the first step up the mountain with you.
Things would still be roses when we get home, I assure you
You told me once yourself Sally sometimes has a tendency to bore you
So trust me, we’ve dreamt about it since grade three
I wouldn’t feed you lies and tell you it was angus beef
So if the only reason that to still be there for the ones you love
You see me at your back window waving from above
I’m offering you a once in a thousand lifetime chance
To see that view, then we’ll plant our flag.
I’m just starting to see myself climbing that mountain without her
I’m just starting to see myself climbing that mountain with you.
The reason that you can’t be there for the ones you love
We’re freezing, climbing mount Whitman with our sisters and our brothers
And yes I’m aware we might run out of food and get frostbite on our hands
It’s alright, I’ve always got a back-up plan.

Indecisive Mirrors
04:29
|
|||
We need someone with confidence to navigate
And we need someone to carry all the bags
I can’t believe I left my job at the tavern for this.
No one’s looking out for you. Aren’t you sick of all the orders that they shout at you?
Fantasies of violent deeds do permeate
But if I keep my lid on tight, they’ll never know
But they’ll receive a nasty shock on the sunrise
I’ll abandon all of you. When you back in town, what you gonna do?
Without an answer and without a plan
You put your best foot forward, no looking back at all.
Indecisive mirrors reflect no more.
Did you ever wanna raise the bar? Take off like a shooting star?
And pole vault right over yourself?
Indecisive mirrors. Indecisive mirrors.
I guess there’s nothing else.
I guess it’s just that
I need to quit this sitting on the fence
I just need an opportunity to say ‘thank you, it’s not for me’
I need some business sense and clarity
I just need some mathematic skills. I’m asking…
Can you ever forgive me? I don’t know what I expected but it sure wasn’t this.
I swear that I’ll let you hit me. I’ll let you keep the compass, but I will leave.
Without an answer and without a fact
You put your best foot forward, no looking back at all.
Indecisive mirrors reflect no more.
Did you ever wanna raise the bar? Take off like a shooting star?
And pole vault right over yourself?
Indecisive mirrors. Indecisive mirrors.
I guess there’s nothing else.
I guess it’s just that.

Backward Steps

When I was 16 years old
I offered her my jacket, she was hunched up in the cold
She asked for me to hold her.
I'm lucky she still loves me
But I'm weaker for it too
The hardest part of being up here is I can see her from this view.
But I'm doing the best that I can
There is only so much that I can stand
There's a fire deep inside her
But she knows that I'm still her man.
I can't believe this guy
He gets a week away from his lady and all he wants to do is cry
Give me the single life
Leave me to my own devices and I'll see you the pub
Don't come around unless invited
I want no part in your club.
But I'm doing the best that I can
And it's simple because I'm just one man
We arrive and then we die and
We're just doing the best we can.
(We can do better than this)
Even though I know I'm good enough, I know I probably can.
We can (we can do better)
We can (we can do better)
We can.
The only way ahead is if
We're doing the best that we can
If we're doing the best that we can
If we're doing the best that we can
If we're doing the best that we...
My mama said:
"Watch out for the people taking backward steps
Never make a friend with someone with no friends
So much in their heart but nothing in their heads.
You better take precautions in their company.
Protect yourself first.
They may have a thirst
For harming on you
And others.
So keep an eye out for them.
Protect yourself first,
They may have a thirst.”

Hey, hey, hey everybody.
Did we eat those beans last night?
I could’ve sworn I’d seen a couple tins of tuna
And I could really use a bite
And I’m hoping that’s alright…

Face it, mate, you’ve had your share.
We’ve nicknamed you ‘William Welfare.’
That’s not right, mate. That’s not fair.
I eat the same as all the rest, it’s just that…
I’m in a state of all declining,
Waste no time to face the climb.
I’ll need my feed.
Well, you’re not a special person, everybody’s the same.
Legs are shaking, we are taking anything to numb the pain.
You’ve got a lot of nerve, but don’t seem to have heard the words
You know you’re not the only one.
I’ll bet you were an only child
With parents who didn’t care
About the accident that slithered out of them.
Push me once and, mate, it’s shame on you
But if you push me two times, you better expect I’m gonna get your little doggie too.
He’s given everything he wants, he’s given everything he needs,
But at the end of this day’s marathon he’ll give in when he bleeds.
He’s got a lot of nerve and he’d never speak a word
Although, to Rob he is a son.
Just need a place where I can hide his body,
I’ve lost the plot.
Abort the mission, I’ll have a piece of fruit instead.

Trial & Terror

I could’ve sworn I’d find you here
In fact, I did. That’s why I came.
You’re always first to rise, last to bed,
Now I know who’s to blame.
You’ve got some crumbs just around your bottom lip right there
A little to the right, a little to the left.
Hold on, I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick
Hold on, if you’re thinking- if you’re thinking that
I’m capable of stealing from my friends
Maybe you should a little look in the mirror
And I’ll see you at dawn.
Has anybody seen Santa?
I can’t find her anywhere, last time was last night.
She went out hunting but she never came back,
She was probably attacked, we gotta send a party out to find her.
No one’s going anywhere, ‘til we sort out this mess.
I’m heading East, I need the rest of you to search the West.
Hold on, just because your little doggie gone and run away
Doesn’t mean we need to listen to you barking all day
So come on, I think I’ve seen him in a cave where he likes to play.
Come on, I’ll show you where your doggie’s at.

Santa's Song
04:55
|
|||
There isn’t much that we can say or do,
So I made a mushroom and angus beef stew.
The meat is tough but there’s enough to go around
As we all pray that three don’t become two.
There’s still a chance that they’re alive out there.
Although I doubt it, we’ve searched everywhere.
In my dreams I heard him barking,
He emerged out of the darkness just to say hello.
Where did they go? Robert and his dog were more switched on than most
Goes to show – anything can happen trekking through the snow
Let’s raise a mug, let’s pretend it’s filled with worthy wine to toast
Rob and his dog – most of the time I couldn’t tell which one was the pug.
Down the hatch, lads. Glug, glug, glug.
Should we take this as some kind of sign from above?
Turn back and make the most of what we left behind in Fevernall.
Should we fake it? Poker-face it? Make an oath and never break it?
Am I mistaken, what’s at stake is just our pride?
How could we live under a silhouette of shame?
Life as a neighbour to the mountain we couldn’t tame?
All that we’ve achieved thus far is pain.
If we throw the towel in now, well, all of the losses we’ve sustained
Would be for nothing, would be in vain.
So much suffering, so little gain.
Something in this stew is causing a change.
So let’s rise to the expectations set before the climb
And we’ll return as the greatest heroes of our time.

Avalanche
04:05
|

If you looked inside me, you would not believe your own two eyes
If you looked inside me, you would be in for a big surprise
Ooh, someone’s hiding, something buried deep and out of sight
Here’s a clue…
You can’t knock on a door that isn’t there
The entrance isn’t wide but you must come inside
Or I will keep you up until the middle of the night.
Did you hear a howling? Like a lost dog, or a gust of wind?
Words so confounding, am I crazy? No one else heard it.
It’s the truth…
You should follow the sound right to its source
(I’ll) come along as well, in case you need some help.
I think those gold caps have you in a swell
And maybe sense has gone abandoned you in hell.
Hands of a friend asphyxiate.
But they don’t seem to note the walls vibrate,
Before it’s too late.
The sky is falling,
I regret the fight but all is forming
Whiteness,
It was glorious.
The end of my short story is with you.

Different Temperatures
03:56
|
|||
Where are all the others members of the expedition, brother?
Tried to save the life of old mate
But I was just too late
A victim of the avalanche
He never stood a second chance
On the bright side, the silver lining
to this travesty
The two of us were out unscathed
We get to die another day
How did we get to the top of the hill
?
And you’re wearing the jacket belonging to Bill
?
So you salvaged his garment,
but left him to die?
Am I getting this straight?
Am I reading you right?
You and I know that he was too slow
In more than one or two ways.
He was a burden and a drunk
He couldn’t swim and so he sunk.
In this foggy man eat dog world
That we find ourselves in
There is no reason to rebel
Our own capacity to kill
Hold your bloody horses
Tell me what the meat in the first course was.
Maybe it's plausible
Maybe it's not
Am I losing my mind
?
Am I losing the plot?
Did he say what I think
Did he slay Robert’s dog
?
Am I freezing to death
Or is it getting hot?
I can’t tell the different temperatures apart no more
I can’t tell the different temperatures apart.
I can’t tell the different temperatures apart no more
I can’t tell the different temperatures apart.

Saves Them Going Home
05:14
|
|||
I turned you into a fantasy and somehow I forgot.
I thought you wanted to dance with me.
Then it turned out you did not.
Can’t hold on any longer now
Even though there once was good reason.
It saves me going home.
Took a ride, couldn’t think straight.
The only thing I could concentrate on were your lies.
I’ve got nothing to do and nowhere to be late.
I head down that long road and out the gate.
This journey I planned with the young native man
Knows the lay of the land like the back of this hand
Could save me going home.
He wouldn’t know this is a one handed game.
Showered and clothed he wouldn’t feel any pain.
We are all nomads of the sun and the rain.
I’ll tell the story my own way.
He’s going home.
